A rant about a tiler named Marco!

Unfortunately it would appear we have struck our first major "quality control" issue by way of a dodgy/careless tiler. Upon inspection of the nearly-completed tiling works last Friday, it was quickly apparent that the tiler must've had better things on his mind for the two days he was at our place last week.

Issues include chipped floor tiles, grout lines from wall to floor not lining up in places they should, floor tiles "unlevel" (we paid a laying fee for our floor tiles and they still can't get it right!!) and our "Feature Tile" in the Ensuite is not in the right spot - it should be around a third of a tile lower as it is currently running through our shower heads and there is not enough space to put a full tile on top of the feature tile to "finish" it off. Coincidently, he managed to get the feature tile right in the Main Bathroom so go figure!

After seeing the rather dismal result, I immediately contacted our Site Supervisor, Luke, and met with him on-site yesterday afternoon to discuss my concerns. Luckily, Luke agreed with me on all matters though is going to seek feedback from "Marco" as to why he has tiled the Ensuite differently to the Main Bathroom before he comes back to me with a resolution on that particular matter. I do believe, however, that Luke has complete clarity that I am not happy and the only option available is to fix it - needless to say I won't be accepting a "credit" for dodgy work simply because they don't want to rip the tiles off and start again. At least the tiler has to come back anyway - as our feature tiles had not yet arrived for the Ensuite.

On a more positive note, the cladding around our front porch has now gone up and looks great - will look even better once it is stained!! And on Monday, the plasterer was there finishing up on puttying up the skirtings & architraves as well as making some "corrections" around the kitchen cabinets - according to Luke, the frame was built incorrectly so they have had to do some extra work around the kitchen cabinets so that everything fits flush.

The painter is due to start on Thursday and is due to take approximately 2 weeks (internal and external) and then the week before their Christmas shutdown, most of the final fit-off items (such as bench tops, taps, power points, lights, A/C vents, handles, glass splash back etc) will go in. At this stage our handover will occur sometime between 20-24 January, however that also depends on how long it takes them to fix the tiling in the Ensuite.

We also have a new Administrator in their Head Office as it would appear ours resigned last Friday - which would explain why I left 3 voicemails for her on Thursday & Friday of last week and never heard back. Our new administrator, Margaret, seems on top of things and actively took down notes of all our issues so far - I can only hope the communication is better from here on in, although I'm not sure it could get much worse!

Latest photos are below (including some of the dodgy tiling). Once I have heard back from Luke later this week around the tiling, I will update again.

Don't need my glasses to see that it is not exactly level!!

Chipped tile!!

Grout lines don't line up on back wall of shower

Why did he start with 1/3 tile at the bottom??????????

  1. What a nightmare with the tiling! Thanks for letting us know his name. We probably need to watch out this name when we get to this stage. Strange that he does the tiling at the ensuite and bathroom differently.

What are your colour selections for the followings? We having a bit of trouble deciding and your colour scheme are very similar to what we wanted.

    Infill Above Windows
    Infill Above Doors
    Meter Box/Downpipes
    Eaves/Alfresco/Portico Ceiling
    Colorbond Fascia
    Laundry Door (Outside of Door)

    1. Infills/Meter box/Downpipes = Dulux Camel Train
      Colourbond gutter = Monument
Colourbond fascia = Surfmist (same as Garage Door)
Our Laundry Door is an aluminium sliding door - but the rear floor to the Garage is also Camel Train
Eaves/Alfresco/Porch Ceiling = Dulux Whisper White (same as inside)
